The Hon Pravind Kumar Jugnauth – Prime Minister

Since he became Prime Minister five years ago, Pravind Kumar Jugnauth has focused on measures which underpin his vision of innovation for shared prosperity.

Pravind Kumar Jugnauth then steadily moved up the ranks to reach the very top, as Prime Minister, twenty one years later. He was first elected to Parliament in 2000 when he was appointed Minister of Agriculture. In this post, he was the architect of a Strategic Plan for the Sugar industry that led to diversification beyond sugar production and a manpower right-sizing exercise with favourable retirement outcomes for ageing workers

In September 2003, he became Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, a post he held until 2005. Five years later, he came back to power as Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Finance and Economic Development. After the 2014 election, he headed the Ministry of Technology, Communication and Innovation before taking up the portfolio of Finance and Economic Development

On 23 January 2017, he became Prime Minister. Under his leadership, Mauritius has embarked on the road to a modern and forward-looking economy. He won a fresh mandate in 2019 to pursue his development policy. He has implemented a series of measures to create a new growth pole around new technologies.

Pravind Kumar Jugnauth has initiated a massive programme of infrastructure development to modernise the country. The 26 Km light rail transit project, launched in March 2017 is transforming the socio-economic landscape of Mauritius and unleashing new business opportunities around the stations. Pravind Kumar Jugnauth considers environmental sustainability as a guiding principle in his development strategy. He insists on inclusive development as an overarching objective that cuts across sectoral policies. His pledge to leave no one behind was put into action when he introduced, in 2017, the Minimum Wage
